The wines of the brand Borgate originate in Abruzzo, which is dominated by the Apennines. The few flat areas are situated high above sea level and the climatic conditions vary from cool and humid in the high inland to constantly warmer and drier at the Adriatic coast. Most of the vineyards are located on hills with calcareous clay soils along the Adriatic Sea.
The red grape variety Montepulciano is widespread in central Italy and used in Abruzzo for the famous Montepulciano d’Abruzzo. It is an ancient grape variety, distinguishable from the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, which is made of Sangiovese. Montepulciano was named after the Tuscan city of the same name, located in the province of Siena.
