There are milestones that represent more than simply the passing of time; they tell a story of passion, courage and a constant pursuit of quality. For Castelfeder, 2026 marks one of these special moments: the 35th anniversary of Burgum Novum, the range that for more than three decades has embodied the most authentic and prestigious expression of this Alto Adige family winery.
The story of Burgum Novum began in 1989 with a shared vision between founder Alfons Giovanett and his son Günther. The objective was clear: to create a selection capable of representing the pinnacle of quality in the winery’s production, bringing Castelfeder’s finest and most representative wines together under a single name.
The name itself also holds a fascinating story. In 1189, a fire devastated the village of Egna. Bishop Conrad promoted its reconstruction, giving it the name Burgum Novum de Egna, the “new village”. A place reborn from its own roots, just like this range, which for more than three decades has continued to evolve while remaining true to tradition.
Today, Burgum Novum is in the hands of the third generation of the Giovanett family. Ines and Ivan continue the path begun by their predecessors, preserving the family heritage while interpreting it with a modern sensibility. The result is a collection of wines that expresses Alto Adige in its most elegant and authentic form.
The grapes come exclusively from selected vineyards in the finest wine-growing areas of the region. Every detail, from manual vineyard management to the decisions made in the cellar, is focused on achieving the highest quality. Following careful vinification, the wines mature for 18 months in barriques and are then refined for at least another year in the bottle, developing depth, complexity and an extraordinary capacity to evolve over time.
With the 2023 vintage, which will be released in August, the Burgum Novum range reaches its 35th edition: an anniversary that celebrates not only an important chapter in Castelfeder’s history, but also the profound bond between family, terroir and wine culture.
Chardonnay Riserva Burgum Novum
Elegant, with a deep flavor profile and full of personality, Chardonnay Riserva Burgum Novum comes from selected vineyards in the Bassa Atesina region, characterized by gravelly, calcareous soils rich in glacial moraine sediments. Following a long ageing period, it reveals its elegance through a complex bouquet of mineral and smoky notes, accompanied by aromas of ripe banana, apple and nuts. On the palate, it impresses with its harmonious structure, vibrant minerality and a freshness that supports its longevity. A wine that pairs naturally with fish dishes, white meats, grilled vegetables and selected cheeses.
Pinot Nero Riserva Burgum Novum
One of the most representative wines in the range, Pinot Nero Riserva expresses the most elegant soul of Alto Adige. Its grapes grow in particularly mineral-rich clay soils in the Bassa Atesina area, where the variety finds ideal conditions to express finesse and complexity. Its ruby-red colour with garnet highlights introduces an intense aromatic profile dominated by wild berries, blackberry and raspberry, enriched by delicate nuances of chocolate. On the palate, it stands out for its balance, depth and persistence, making it a perfect accompaniment to red meats, game and aged cheeses.
